Phutureprimitive is a Portland based producer who had eluded my musical genius radar until recently when I saw the artwork for his new album Kinetik. Android Jones never fails to make me take notice. I clicked the link and was immediately awestruck into making the purchase. Upon first listen, I knew I had stumbled upon something special- the kind of release that would get my heart beating fast and keep me listening for weeks on end. Kinetik is more than just energy- it is the motion, the energy, and the emotion all in one. It is the story of us in the here and now. As Rain (the man behind the moniker) puts it, “This album is a reflection of the times we are living in … hard and aggressive, lush and beautiful, kinetic, frenetic, distorted, ever changing … but with each passing moment, a chance to move through life and make it a better place than we found it.”
The songs of Kinetic are made up of sultry synth lines, glitched rhythms, deep low wobbling bass, and cascading crescendos of texture that evokes visions of utopia in my minds eye. This album tells me a story of hope and joy- it is a soundtrack for a generation of inspired people coming together in the way that we do to try to make our dreams come true.
The Phutureprimitive live show is on the road now with Ott and will kick off the festival season at Lightning in a Bottle on May 27, 2011.
